Do Things That Challenge:
Create Resonating Social Impacts

Left Brain is one of the few creative consultancies in Taiwan with “social marketing” uniquely at its core, facilitating diverse facets including brand innovation, policy communication, social welfare advocacy, environmental sustainability, as well as creative and cultural curating. Possessing know-hows to produce insights in social issues and keen to humanistic spirit and storytelling, we offer distinctive perspectives and resonances for good. As such, elevating “things that challenge” into “social impacts” that matter is our modest yet audacious aspiration.

Last Call
Last Call

In the trendiest bar, let’s talk about biodiversity.

If Earth speaks, can you hear her aspiration and sorrow?

Biodiversity is the most critical issue selected by the United Nations in 2020. According to the research statistics, there are about 1 million species of animals and plants close to extinction. If we fail to flatten the curve of global biodiversity’s loss, it is estimated that over a quarter of species worldwide will disappear by 2050, which will affect human’s survival and well-being severely.

Working with Taiwan Environmental Information Association, LeftBrain turns serious environmental issues into the “last calls” of species. Let’s walk into two trendiest bars in Taipei. Through the interactive installations, sounds, and themed exhibition, together with drinks themed with biodiversity, we proactively communicate the environmental issues and stories of different species to the broader community in the city in ways that are innovative and creative.

Starting off from the angles of ocean and mountains/forests, we design 10 themed cocktails in the names of species, including “fly”, “Taiwan Cow-tail Fir”, “kelp”, and “sea turtle”. An exclusive alcohol menu, calling coasters, and an immersive interactive space are available in a limited time to communicate with the public in a trendy and interesting way.

In addition, “private kitchen banquet” is organized to usher our guests into a world of rich biodiversity in order to learn once again the food ingredients familiar yet strange to us. While we savor the delicacies from mountains to oceans, let us listen carefully to the last calls of species.

It is the belief of LeftBrain that the public policies and social welfare issues should go beyond the echo chamber and into the crowds, amplifying the social impacts of issues with interdisciplinary collaboration and novel thinking in communication.

Dua Ma Chu

Six blind kids and their cameras

They are the only photographers in the world who cannot see their own works.
Going beyond their limit, six visually-impaired kids listen, touch, and feel to challenge the meaning of “seeing”. They recorded their impressions about their favorite scenes in the moment with cameras to share their perspectives in “seeing the world”.

To allow them to feel their own works, sculptor Chen Yi-Chang turn the children’s works into 3D reliefs, so that they could get a picture of how their photographs look like.

“Dua Ma Chu” (Taiwanese: big eyes) redefines our meaning of “eyes”. The kids who is visually-impaired may not see the world with “eyes” as we do. Yet, they have other “eyes” as well. It may be ears, skin, fingers, friends, or family. The purpose of this exhibition is to open different eyes for children, encouraging them to connect with the world in their own ways. Meanwhile, the public may see the stories of these visually-challenged kids and the lovely worlds in their minds via photography.

Human Library

Face to face, we let go prejudices to embrace diversity.

Human Library is a movement to facilitate dialogues, reduce prejudices, encourage understanding, and embrace diversity. Initiated by Stop the Violence in Denmark in 2000, it has been promoted throughout 30 more countries worldwide.

Each book in a Human Library is a real person. Through face-to-face dialogues, readers can see true faces of different people and lives, allowing for a more liberal, inclusive, and open society.

Officially authorized from the organization in Denmark, LeftBrain introduced it into major events in succession. In 2014, it collaborated with Simple Life to plan the showcase of a Human Library. There were 15 human books, encompassing issues of gays, indigenous peoples, tattoo, social movement, and foreign spouses.

In Naughty Education 2015, human books related to themes of education were invited. From appearances to gender, they hope to let go prejudices to embrace diversity in casual conversations, flipping the impression of stubbornness and seriousness with education.
